The Twelve Sacred Traditions of Magnificent MothersinLaw (Audible Audio Edition) Haywood Smith Erin Novotny Inc Belle Books Books
My timing for running across this book was perfect. I have a gorgeous, smart, practical, and successful daughter-in-law (DIL). She has been married to my son for 7 years and has just given me a beautiful granddaughter. We have a great relationship so far, and I want to keep it that way.I wasn’t always the world’s best mother – my housekeeping and cooking skills run the gamut from barely OK to atrocious. Even my most successful recipe, a super easy chili, was given to me by my DIL. My greatest regret about this book is that I didn’t find it earlier.
Smith wrote this to amuse as well as to inform. She sprinkled it with anecdotes, cartoons, quotes, etc. to make it a fun read as well as an easy one. This is the greatest gift I can think of for any MIL, any MIL-to-be, or even any mothers of a grown child who seem to hear wedding bells. It is a gift you will want to share with other women to lighten up their lives or possibly to save them from themselves.

The Twelve Sacred Traditions of Magnificent MothersinLaw (Audible Audio Edition) Haywood Smith Erin Novotny Inc Belle Books Books Reviews
The book begins with the following quote
"Nobody gets any brownie points for loving people who are easy to love. Difficult people are God's sandpaper. They'll rub those rough edges off you and let you prove your faith."
A wonderful quote by the authors Granny Bess, who undoubtedly is a spring of lovely advice! She sprinkles helpful thoughts from her Granny through out the book. I loved them all, we all need a Granny Bess in our lives to keep us straight.
The tips and advice in the book are delivered in a funny "Been there or I know someone who has" format. Some of the things are light hearted and funny, such as "Let them learn from there mistakes, even if they use the money they saved by getting food stamps to go on a Caribbean cruise". Others are deeper, such as discussing spousal abuse.
I love this funny although short book and would encourage others to pick it up and give it a read. I'm sure, if you are like me, you will be laughing out loud at some of the stories she tells. In the end though, it has a good heartfelt moral of the story, so to speak. That is if you want to be close to your adult children and there spouses, you must learn to create boundaries so you are not unduly pushing yourself on them and to be careful not to step over them once they are in place. To always be kind and caring and to set a good example, even if you have to bite your tongue to do it. Great lessons for us all.
Or in my case, do have. I just couldn't figure out how to be like her now that my oldest is getting married. In my less sane moments, I raised my boy children on this advice, knowing I might have a tendency to not let go if your wife and your mother disagree on something, side with your wife.
This book tells me what to do and goals to reach for, but boy-oh-boy, it ain't easy! Makes me respect my own MIL all the more!
I bought this as a gift for a good friend whose son is getting married soon and thought she would enjoy it as a Christmas gift. I haven't read the book and since it isn't Christmas yet, haven't gotten any feed back from her but what I saw as I looked through it, looked like a fun book. I know she will enjoy it and is looking to be the perfect Mother in Law!
If for no other reason, the author suggested this for really aggravating situations (which I have many) and therefor I suggest you read this book for other hints to get through the visit. AUTHOR's SUGGESTION when all else fails and you'r at wits end, WRITE the hurtful, aggravating situation/ feeling on a piece of paper and BURN IT - I tried it, I don't know why but it works - I don't think about that situation (dwell on it) any longer. There are more useful suggestions, but this ONE thing helped me soooo much!
I bought and read the kindle version before mailing a book to my MIL. Before I sent it she was the stereotypical mother in law. She questioned my ability to parent, cook, clean, and be a good wife for her son. In addition, when she came out she didn't ask us when or how long would be convenient for us; she just booked a ticket. Don't get me wrong, I do really like her. Her actions weren't malicious. She was a new MIL and didn't know better. Since receiving the book, she is much more considerate and we hear from her less. Another reviewer said that reading this book can improve most people and I agree. It pointed out a few behaviors which I need to work on myself.
Full disclosure-was married to my high school sweetheart for seven years, divorced. Married to my forever Man eighteen years and counting. Hit the MIL jackpot both times! I learned from the best how to be Great Step Mom, but with my examples and this handy guide, I hope my Son in Law, future DIL and future SIL think I am wholly Magnificent.
Wow, this book is fantastic and one that every single Mother-In-Law should read over and over again. I wonder if there is a subtle way to get a copy in my own MIL's hands!! My sister is getting married in the fall and I plan to get a copy as a gift for both MILs. I truly wish someone had done the same for me when I got married.
If you feel this book deserves anything less than 5 stars then more than likely you are probably guilty of breaking one or more "traditions" this book touches on. It's all about respect and boundaries for your adult children and the sooner parents/in-laws can see (and accept) that the better your relationship can and will be. If you're not following these sacred traditions then chances are you're probably already overstepping your boundaries and -whether the couple speaks up or not -ultimately hurting your relationship with your married child and their spouse.
